Newsjacking case study

I got inspired with David Meerman Scott‘s Newsjacking — Idea of being ahead of media and taking all the benefits of becoming the main source of information on actual topics. I have started my blog Humane Marketing couple of months ago, so i am a rookie blogger with low traffic of around 25 people a day.

Thats what i did. On 16th of January Wikimedia announced 24h blackout for their english version  of Wikipedia and this fact did not get enough coverage in the local media and russian bloggers.

On 17th of January I wrote the post in russian What is SOPA how it is connected to PIPA and why Wikipedia is switched off today.  It is a short post with different points of view on this matter and detailed explanation what SOPA / PIPA are and how they will affect on internet users.

And what happened next was absolutely amazing! On 18th of January i found myself on number 1 position on search queries — «what is SOPA», «what is SOPA PIPA» of Yandex -leading russian search engine!  At the same time i checked my Twitter — #SOPA was a trending topic! Its needless to say that traffic has come!

Certainly next day i lost my position in search engines but its a great feeling to be a star even for a day! So I will continue my experiments on Newsjacking. Let’s see what’s coming next!

Takeaway: There is no need to spend the money on Google AdWords or hire  SEO optimizers. Just start Newsjacking every day!

If you have any expirience of Newsjacking, please share in comments!
